![]() But if they even have half the number of good lines and epic combovers of the original, it will be worth the wait. The news of a Kingpin sequel is pretty much all we have at the moment - there isn’t a script or cast yet, much less a premiere date. The movie really took off via home rentals and eventually thanks to streaming. Whatever the case, theres no way you lived through 1996 without seeing Kingpin, which features Woody Harrelson as Roy, an alcoholic, ex-professional bowler who is down and out after squandering his career two decades earlier. It has all the elements of a typical gonzo Farrellys flick but when it was released it did a middling $25 million in box office receipts. Kingpin has in part become a favorite of comedy nerds in the quarter century since it premiered. Since there’s no script yet, no cast is attached to the sequel at this time, according to sources. With this fast-paced opening, Kingpin swiftly treats its audience to a vintage ‘90s Bill Murray performance (mixing sleaze and charm like no other), not. As such, it’s unclear whether the Farrelly brothers will direct or have a hand in the screenplay, though the first film was written by Barry Fanaro and Mort Nathan. The best scenes in Kingpin are the bowling scenes as the personalities of both Woody Harrelson (Roy) and Bill Murray (Ernie) come out, and the humor and jokes. Left to fend for himself, Roy is beaten savagely by the men he and Bernie had just conned in a violent montage that ends with Roy’s hand being thrust into a bowling ball return and severed. The plot, setting and time period of the Kingpin sequel are being kept under wraps, and additional creative elements are still being determined both in front of and behind the camera. In addition to improvising nearly all of his lines, Murray actually bowled three strikes in a row on camera to a live audience in one take. ![]() Peter and Bobby Farrelly are set to produce a sequel to their 1996 bowling comedy Kingpin, and the project is currently in active development at Village Roadshow Pictures, Collider has exclusively learned. In Kingpin (1996) Bill Murray plays the infamous pro-bowler Ernie McCracken.
